Is it true, I dont need to buy different sizes?
Bumgenius one size nappies will fit your baby from 3.6 kgs (around 7 pounds) right through to 15.5 kgs (toilet training anywhere between 2-2 years). If you expect a smaller child, we recommend some separate newborn nappies, such as flat nappies and a few of the All In Ones (whose weight range goes down to an eensy 2.2 kgs).
So these are pocket nappies. How do I use them?
The outer of the nappy consists of a breathable waterproof layer and an inner stay dry lining. Between those layers is a pocket opening into which you place an absorbent insert. You can use whatever you like for the absorbency, but all you will need are the two highly absorbent and quick drying microfibre inserts that come with each nappy. Separate the layers when you pop them nappies in your nappy bucket, That way, you will be very thoroughly cleaning your nappies, and ensuring rapid drying time. You can pre-stuff your nappies ready to go before change time, or stuff them as you go.
I'd like to use bumgenius on a full time basis. How many nappies will I need?
You will need 24 nappies. You will put a nappy wash on every couple of days.
Will you include instructions for use and care of my new nappies?
Naturally, your nappy package is presented with comprehensive use and care instructions, as well as details for the nappy's 12 month warranty.
How many times do I need to wash my nappies before we can use them?
With bumgenius nappies, just the once, same as when you have new towels and sheets. You don't need to build up absorbency in the nappies, simply wash out the conditioners used in the manufacturer of the fabrics.
Can I use nappy creams?
Heavy zinc based creams will ruin the absorbency of any nappy and ultimately cause leaks. If you do need to ever use a nappy cream (and because of the stay dry inner lining, we expect you wont), please use a natural plant based cream, sparingly, and in conjunction with a biodegradable liner. The use of heavy nappy creams will void your 12 month product warranty.
What detergents do you recommend?
Additive free POWDER detergents. No bleach, no whiteners, no softeners, conditioners etc. In our experience, ecostore (widely available at most Woolworths supermarkets now, but also online here at Nurture Nappies) , Planet Ark's Aware powder detergents are economical and effective with reliably good results. Do not use soap flakes.
Can I tumble dry my nappies?
With bumgenius, absolutely. Line drying in the sunshine is best though, because of the way the sun naturally sanitises your nappies.
What about the Velcro fastening? Will it be scratchy and end up worn?
The Velcro fastening never touches your babys skin. It wraps around the outside of your baby. There are fold back tabs to fasten the Velcro to, to protect it from snagging in the wash. (Hot Tip- A 5 minute hot tumble dry will restore stickiness to Velcro tabs too.)
Do I need a separate night nappy?
No, not usually. With a pocket nappy design ,you have the beauty of a full body of stay dry lining, which is important for overnight to keep your baby comfortable and dry, and the freedom to adjust the absorbency to suit, simply by adding your choice of fibres, or additional inserts. You may like to also consider bumgenius hemp inserts for use overnight for heavier wetters. By wrapping your microfibre insert in hemp, you have a wonderfully absorbent and reliable overnight protection for heavier wetting children.
Apart from the basics of use and care, is there anything else I should know ?
Nurture Nappies recommends a process called stripping which is a bit like a regular service for your nappies. Stripping your nappies removes any build up of detergent and nappy cream residue from your nappies to ensure they are performing optimally (in terms of being leakproof, highly absorbent and fresh smelling. Any other hot tips from the Nurture Nappies mums ?
In our experience, there is a stage that every child goes through when they are a bit fascinated by that lovely sound of Velcro coming undone. We recommend popping the nappy on back to front until your toddler gets over this stage. Additionally, you don't need a separate swim nappy when you use bumgenius pocket nappies. Simply use the outer, minus the absorbent insert, for a cost effective swim nappy!

If you have a newborn, you can fold down the front of the nappy to keep the umbilical area clean and dry. Three snap-downs on the front of the nappy... adjust the rise as your baby grows.
For smaller babies, parents can now use the additional included microfibre mini insert.
